In tracing the planning of city, Egorov has illuminated aspects of urban design that transcent the particular. He has shown how each of the 18th and 19th century planners tried to relate his contribution to the already existing spaces of the city and took care to work within the limitations established by the natural site, historical precedent, climatic conditions, and social and political changes. In its broader context this presupposes a marriage of the arts and the integration of individual parts into an organic whole. It requires a subordination of the minor to the major theme, and the subordination of the star performer-eager to create a master-piece - to the demands of the overall plan. I believe that by showing how St. Petersburg achieved both character and beauty Egorov has pointed a lesson of relevance to the urban designers of today.
