Ca. 1900s.

Item #8224

Oblong Octavo (ca. 14,5x20,5 cm). 50 card stock leaves (24 blank). With 48 mounted gelatin silver photographs, including one large photo ca. 13,5x17 cm (5 ¼ x 6 ¾ in); the rest of the photos are from ca. 8x13,5 cm (3 x 5 ¼ in) to ca. 5x6,5 cm (2 x 2 ½ in). Seven photos captioned in negative. Period brown cloth album fastened with a string; front board with a generic gilt-lettered title “Photographs;” paper label of the “Ideal Specialty Co., Chicago-New York” on the rear pastedown endpaper. A couple of photos mildly faded or with mild silvering, but overall a very good album of interesting strong photos.

Historically interesting collection of original photos, showing the US military camps and bases in the Philippines after the end of the Philippine-American War (1899-1902), including Fort William McKinley in Metro Manila (modern-day Fort Andres Bonifacio) and a military camp on the Corregidor Island. Most likely compiled by an officer or soldier, who served in the 1st Engineer battalion of the US Army, the album includes a large group portrait of American military engineers posing with surveying instruments, as well as three photos of pontoon bridges built by 1st Engineer battalion in and around Manila. There is also a photo of Fort William McKinley under construction, a handcar going up the hill on a railway track, several views of American military camps and garrisons, photos of military men next to their barracks, the interior of a military canteen, a portrait of an artillery man posing with a horse, captioned “Old “Pekin,” Hero of the Boxer Campaign,” etc. One photo portrays American military men with Filipino prisoners of war, carrying logs (note their striped uniform and identification numbers on hats). The other photos show a town street (with visible signs of a restaurant and a post office), a river embankment (apparently, Pasig River) with boats and a small lighthouse and a Filipino village. Ca. 27 photos are various family portraits and scenes taken in the US. Overall an interesting visual source on the history of the US military in the Philippines shortly after the end of the Philippine-American War.

McKinley, P.I.; Old “Pekin,” Hero of the Boxer Campaign, 5th Field Artillery; Pontoon Bridge, Constructed by Co. “D,” 1st Batt.
