This catalog consists of 37 printed items, including books, periodicals, posters, brochures, advertisements, and a fascinating collection of slides, “The Civilized Passenger is a Struggler for Safety on Mass Transportation” (1933). These eclectic and exemplary items are brought together in one place in order to provide an overview of Soviet photomontage in the period 1924-1937.
Although every item features elements of photomontage, the extent of its application and complexity varies widely. In some cases the focus of interest is on a lone cover design. In others, entire books incorporate numerous photomontage images. Occasionally the use of photomontage is surprising — unexpected even by the contributing artist (illustrator) and author. This catalog is lavishly illustrated throughout and provides detailed background information on each item in the collection.
This book is more than a useful survey of unfamiliar examples of Soviet photomontage. It combines a range of printing techniques to offer a feast for the eyes.
