Among the works of Russian applied art of the eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries, the articles made from steel by the Tula armorers occupy a special place. The Tula masters had been gloried long before the foundation of the oldest Russian factory, when Tula, with its fortress-kremlin, was still the canter of a defensive border area on the southern edge of the Muscovite state. In the suburb where most of the smiths lived, state orders for arquebuses and snaphances had been carried out since the end of the sixteenth century. It was here that the Tula Arms Factory was founded in 1712, and with time the town became the canter of Russian arms production.

Среди произведений русского прикладного искусства XVIII - начала IX века художественные изделия из стали, выполненные тульскими оружейниками, занимают особое место. Слава тульских мастеров родилась за много лет до основания старейшего русского завода, когда Тула с крепостью-кремлем еще была центром оборонительного рубежа на южной окраине Московского государства. В слободе, где преимущественно жили кузнецы, с конца XVI века по государственным заказам изготовлялись пищали и самопалы. В 1712 году здесь основали Тульский оружейный завод, а со временем город стал центром русского оружейного производства.
