Few towns were called by the Russian people "great". In times gone by Novgorod was called thus and the small quiet town of Rostov that is situated two hundred kilometers north of Moscow.
But what is so special about Rostov to have earned it the titie "great"? Why do foreigners, even those who are not art lovers, wish to visit Rostov the Great? What draws them here?
Present-day Rostov is famous, primarily, for the white-stone Kremlin, that is three hundred years old. In the second half of the 17th century Metropolitan Iona returned to Rostov from Moscow. He was a very cultured person, had very good artistic taste and was an able organizer and master of his diocese. And it was his idea to construct in the middle of the town on the bank of lake Nero a white-stone Kremlin.
