The general public is fairly well informed about Russian icon-painting, but not about
ancient Russian murals, and only recently has a start been made towards publishing them in a systematic way; despite the considerable quality of early Russian mosaics and frescoes, a comprehensive work about them is still lacking. The fascination of these wall decorations lies in their monumentality, freshness and spontaneity of expression, and the simple, concise nature of their artistic methods. Although a direct and organic continuation of the Byzantine tradition, they have a specific character of their own which is deeply and unmistakably Russian. For this reason, within the general framework of medieval art and culture, they deserve their own special niche.
