In a way Bela can be regarded as a continuation of Tainan*, Book I of the series. Pechorin who, in Taman*, appeared only in the first person, now is portrayed through the narrative of a friend, a veteran of the Caucasian wars. As in Taman', the reader will find a good deal of spirited action, enacted against the background of the Caucasus — the Russian equivalent of our Wild West — with its wild, picturesque, Mohammedan mountaineers, who for so many years fiercely resisted Russian conquest.
