Dieter Blum, born in 1936 in Esslingen-on-the-Neckar, Germany, is a photojournalist and photographer for international periodicals such as Time, Der- Stern, Epoca, GEO, and Paris Match. He also contributes to publications of many German and international corporations. His pictures have been widely exhibited and he has won numerous prizes and awards, including one from the German Federal Republic for an animal photograph which appeared in his superb volume titled Africa, also published by Abrams.
Nikolai N. Mikhailov, born in 1905, is an eminent Soviet geographer and travel writer who has been awarded two state prizes. His thirty books on the USSR and on his journeys all over the world have been published in some three hundred editions and many languages. His warm, nostalgic preface is filled with a deep love for his country and an understanding of the many changes the years have wrought.
Natalya Shemiatenkova, who served as Dieter Blum's travel guide, was born in 1939 in Moscow, where she is an editor and writer for the Agentstvo Pechati Novosti (APN). She graduated from the Institute of Interna-tional Relations and worked for many years in France, Yemen, and Somalia. Her introductions to the book's five sections and her captions to the illustrations provide detailed, up-to-date information and a valuable insight into how modern Russians view themselves and their country.
