The book is about finding and restoring the stories of people captured in a home movie made by the author's grandfather in a small Jewish town in Poland in 1938.
Less than a hundred of the three thousand Jews living there survived. Kurtz's grandfather's film is the only surviving image of this community before its destruction.
The author describes the four-year journey it took to identify the people in the photographs. In his search, he visited the United States, Canada, England, Poland, and Israel, working with archives, film preservation labs, and an abandoned Luftwaffe airfield.
Ultimately, Kurtz found seven surviving residents of the lost city, including two who appeared in the film as children, a 94-year-old woman, and an 86-year-old man who was portrayed as a 13-year-old boy in the film.
