The Russian Verb has always presented a great deal of difficulty to the American student. And yet, it seems, this should not be so, for many of the difficulties encountered in the verbal systems of other languages are not found in Russian. No Russian verb has more than three tenses of the indicative and one subjunctive, the imperative and perhaps four or five participial forms. There are only two conjuga-tional patterns, and only five verbs whose forms differ so much from these patterns that they must be considered irregular.
This very simplicity may contribute to the difficulty experienced by the student, for grammar books rarely contain more than one fully conjugated sample verb for each conjugational pattern. The student is presented with rules for the formation of various verbal forms and must apply these rules to each verb as he meets it. For many students it is easier to proceed from specific examples to rules. It is these examples that this book attempts to provide. It includes 201 of the most common Russian verbs with complete conjugations and participles.
