We continue our literary event series with a discussion on contemporary Ukrainian literature featuring  Ainsley Morse, Vasyl Lozynsky and  Polina Barskova.

Ainsley Morse, a translator and professor of literature at UC-San Diego, has been translating and publishing work by Maria Galina for several years. She will read from Galina’s first book-length collection in English, Communiqués, as well as newer work from the ’Nineveh’ collections.

Ukrainian poet, essayist, translator, literary critic, and curator Vasyl Lozynsky will read from his poetry collection Feast After Debauchery (2014) as well as his new and experimental works and discuss the evolving landscape of contemporary poetry, its context and translation.

Vasyl Lozynsky (b. 1982, Lviv, Ukraine) is a poet, translator, essayist, and literary critic. He studied German language and literature in Lviv and Berlin and has authored several poetry collections. His works have been published in numerous Ukrainian and international journals and anthologies, with translations into eight languages. Lozynsky has edited the online culture magazine Prostory (2008–2021) and has translated authors such as Franz Kafka, Czesław Miłosz, and Jeffrey McDaniel into Ukrainian. His poetry collections have been published in Germany, the U.S., and Poland. He currently teaches in the Slavic Department at the University of Michigan (2023–24) and splits his time between Warsaw and the U.S.

Ainsley Morse is a scholar of twentieth- and twenty-first century literature from the former USSR and its many republics, including Russia and Ukraine, as well as the former Yugoslavia and present day Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. She is the author of Word Play: Experimental Poetry and Soviet Children's Literature (2021) and a translator from Russian, B/C/S and Ukrainian. Her co-translated volume Permanent Evolution: Selected Essays on Literature, Theory and Film (by Yuri Tynianov) won the 2021 AATSEEL Best Scholarly Translation award. She is also a coeditor (with Anastasia Osipova) at Cicada Press, a small independent publisher of translated poetry.

Polina Barskova is a poet, writer, translator and an assistant professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature at UC Berkeley. Her scholarly publications include articles on Nabokov, the Bakhtin brothers, early Soviet film, and the aestheticization of historical trauma, primarily the culture of the Siege of Leningrad (1941–1944).In her book  Living Pictures,( NYRB, 2022) Barskova writes with caustic humor and wild invention about traumas past and present, historical and autobiographical, exploring how we cope with experiences that defy comprehension.
